April 2008 (coming events)

On April 24 we are booked in for a session at the AHG Tuning Arvo. Looking forward to that very much.

March 2008 - All the latest

The diff was a Chrysler 8 3/4 which is a very good diff, but a bit rare over here, so the decision was made to put a Ford 9" in, with a spool.

The distributor, coil and ignition module has also been upgraded to a nice MSD unit, rev limited set to 7100. The last setup was probably not allowing the engine to rev over 5500, so we're confident of some better quarter mile times.

The gearbox was also found to have a crack in the casing so this was rebuilt, and a better transmisison pan fitted. Unfortunately just after 1 day of driving the gearbox would not go into 2nd or 3rd gear. We had to limp the car to a friends workshop in 1st gear, and then the gearbox was pulled apart and the offending valve piece or whatever was machined to fit better and the problem was gone.

A new shifter cable had to be fitted as a fixing came loose on the old one allowing it to contact with the headers and melt the sheathing.

Nostalgia Drags:-

It was a warm day at Kwinana Motorplex, which may have contributed to some disappointing times on the quarter mile. We were hoping to crack into the 12s again but only managed 13.25s. The car did feel extremely strong and Im sure the 12s are in it. The tuning has been tweaked back to a setting that felt a bit punchier and we're looking forward to getting a chance to test this setup.

April 2007 - Tuning Arvo on AHG Track

We went to the Tuning Arvo at the AHG Track near the Perth Airport where anyone can bring there car and go as fast as they dare around the race track!! It was the best fun we've ever had!! However the tired old diff just didnt perform like a diff should, causing only one wheel to fiz up. So the decision was made pretty much there and then to get the diff rebuilt.

December 2007 - Diff, gearbox, ignition is finished.

I got the car back on a Friday night, but on the Saturday morning the gearbox lost 2nd and 3rd, so I had to limp it back to the shop in 1st gear only. A small servo pump or something had got stuck and was actually easily fixed, but it was around xmas time and took quite a while.

January 2008 - Gearbox fixed again and minor LPG work done

After the work done previously a couple of LPG components had blown perhaps due to having the incorrect voltage fed through them, so a new safety cutout and tank level gauge were fitted, and they neatened up some wiring that was left unfinished.

Andy at AB Performance is underway rebuilding a new engine....Here are his words

"Basically we have supplied a core 360 engine, acid cleaned it, bored it 0.030 o/size and honed it to suit the SRP forged pistons, the block has been decked true to crank centre line, we have fitted a lighter harmonic balancer, and as well as resizing the con rods and fitting ARP rod bolts, the rotating assembly has been balanced.

The crank tunnels have been line honed, we have fitted new mains & conrod bearings as well as new camshaft bearing. Because of the line boring of the engine block an O/size Rollmaster
double row chain set has been fitted.

The camshaft is a Comp Cams item with a little over 500 thou valve lift, installed on 110 degree c/line,

I'm pretty happy with the way it has all gone together and with the additional cylinder head work and
a some better intake manifold match porting plus the Pacemaker extractors, this should be a huge step up on the previous engine, the SRP forged pistons weigh 638 grams with the pin...bloody light hence the need to rebalance the reciprocating assy, the lighter balancer should allow faster engine acceleration.

Low 12's are the target Laynie, darn good effort with a LPG 360, the heads are off again to the machine shop for their final machining.

Best regards

Kwinana Motorplex Street Drags is where the greenval produced its fastest time of 12.97sec. The evening was planned really only to be a bit of a burnout session so the 185-60 burnout tyres were on the back. The tune hasnt been touched since the last run at Kwinana a few weeks ago where the mixtures were fiddled with and where left in an unkown state really. Though the fiddling on that night did improve times .3sec but still only a 13.5sec could be mustered on that night.

The first run netted a 13.4sec pass, better than whole night of racing previously, so the greenval was put into race mode. The open pipes were noticed and commented on by the commentator but luckily not the officials.

greenval was plagued with trouble from the air intake pipes and backfiring at high revs and at the top of the track. The 12.97sec run top speed was only at 99mph caused by the last 50m being run with the foot of the throttle as it backfired unhappily.

So the 12.97sec run is being attributed to some minor adjustments done to the linkages on the twin gas carbs, big burnouts to get the 185s hot and sticky, and perhaps the open pipe setup. The tune is going to be looked at, and some lower 12s should be on the cards.

24-October 2003

Wannero Blue Light Drags was the venue for the long awaited return of greenval to the burnout strip. Unfortunately, burnouts on the race track are no longer permitted. The good days of full track burnouts are gone it seems. So the burnout tyres were removed and saved for a later day, and some tyres some reasonable grip were put on instead. This dropped the 1/8th mile time from 8.71s to 8.40s (The 8.4 was with braking before the finish line but)

A couple of more experienced racers (Dean and Mitch with there 12sec 1/4 mile Fords, 1 big blocked and 1 worked small block were reducing the tyres pressures and idea was put into the greenval tyres too) This reduced times to 8.07s, good enough to be fastest on the night. Next fastest was 8.24 and then 8.35 to the Ford guys and a commodore tied for 3rd.

17th October 2003

greenval is back on the road...and LSD is back in the car. After the gearbox and diff 'breakage' a quick fix 1-wheel diff was fitted. Thanks Daniel for helping with (doing) that. A 2nd hand 3.9:1ratio LSD has been fitted now. Its not as good as locked, but its better than 1 wheeling. Thanks to AB Performance for their work, cheques in the mail.

The next event greenval will hopefully be at is the Wanneroo Blue Light drags, on 24th October. Thanks to Bridgestone Osborne Park.

25th April 2003

Anzac Day at Wanneroo was a day of 1/8th mile racing and burnout competition. greenval did some nice smokey burnouts (in the videos section) but blew the diff up in the burnout competition (no footage yet) So for a while, greenval is off the road.

18th April 2003

Burnout King 2003 has been and gone. Thankfully the greenval was able to put on a show. It was definitely the best burnout ever produced by the car. Unfortunately the fan belt got thrown off forcing the engine to overheat a bit and therefore the burnout was cut short. So no popped tyres. Luckily though the fan belt was basically the worst of the damage. The shifter is a little stiff, but nothing too major and didnt stop it from being driven home.

Thanks to all the people with their nice comments and things to say about the car and the burnout. One pretty young girl was even getting her top signed by some of the drivers, and I felt privelaged to be one of the ones asked to sign it, she left me a great spot to sign too. I reckon more girls should get their blouses signed by us hard working burnout drivers!!

Now for some technical info about the leadup to the events.....

After the val was loaded up ready to go, it decided not to start, and all seemed lost for a moment, but a check of the usual suspects of such a glich soon got it running happily. It was of course caused by a damp distributor cap, caused by the cleaning of the engine bay earlier in the day.

The car also had black flames applied to the sides. Using a removable black vinyl for the job, they can be removed easily and painlessly at a later date, but the crowd seemed to like them, so they're gonna stay on there for a short while at least. Preview pictures of the flame job have been o here for a while, but no there are 'real' pics, not just computer generated previews..go here to see them...

A bug that has been evident for a few months prior to this event has been a bit of a ticking coming from the engine which has been very hard to diagnose, but since it wasnt been affecting power output, or any other facets at all other being a bit annoying it was basically ignored. On the way to Kwinana on the Friday afternoon a louder than usual 'chink-chink' noise raised alarm bells and so I stopped and went back down the road to see if anything had fallen out. Upon further inspection it was discovered a flexplate bolt had fallen out of the gearbox. Not a bolt that was supposed to be attached, but one that had obviously been left behind on a previous gearbox rebuild or something. So basically, the annoying ticking noise was gone, only a few kilometres from the raceway. Perfect timing if you ask me.

The rest is history...video footage of the burnout is coming very soon!! If anyone reading this has footage from the day, Id love to hear from you.

1st March 2003
Saturday 1st March 2003 - greenval is back on the streets. With a new cam, basically the same as was in it. But in the process the intake manifold was machined to allow installation with gaskets, unlike it was before. A couple of pieces have been painted up black. I've just finished washing it and im gonna take out for a spin.
13th January 2003

greenval was set to make a big appearance at Motorvation 2003. Though the preparation was left a little late due to personal reasons, the chance to let loose on the snake pit in competition and cruising is exactly what greenval lives for. A recent ticking from the rockers caused a minor engine pull-down with the hope a set of lifters or replacing some rockers would alleviate the problem, but upon further inspection, the cam is indeed the problem, with one badly worn lobe, and others showing signs.

Thanks to Criss (footage and links to come) a new cam could have been slotted in Friday night, but a lack of harmonic balance puller, and other factors, made me decide that the cam change would not happen just yet. So greenval will be absent from Motorvation yet again.

1st July 2002

greenval is back on the road!!! The gearbox has been rebuilt (twice). There was a delay for a small part for the valve body, so a substitute 'auto' valve body was slotted in, and in the time that this valve body was in, the gearbox destroyed itself. Despite accusations that the driver had done a lifetime of abuse to the gearbox in those 2 weeks, the gearbox was not happy with changing gears itself, and now with the manual valve back in it's back to 100%!!!!

greenval will not be entered in burnout comps, as it seems the gearbox just can not handle them (or more to the point, the frequency they would need to be rebuilt is above budget at this stage). It has been relegated to street bruiser and occasional track terroriser. But this doesnt mean the great video footage you've grown to love will stop, it just means Im gonna have to try harder to get new and exciting footage to you!! Hopefully soon from the red capsicum too...

12 April 2002

Sadly, greenval is off the road again. The stronger, better gearbox wasn't strong enough or better enough to withstand the use (read: abuse) over the last couple of months. A good time was had by all, but now that phase has come to an end. A recon on the gearbox is (or will be) underway shortly, and then the decision has been made to refrain from as many burnout comps (if any at all...) and keep it on the road for an unprecedented amount of time, maybe stretching as long as a year. So whats new content is there gonna be on this website?? Smaller burnouts, better camera angles, more exotic locations and maybe some 12sec runs in the future. But for now, there will be nothing new coming here....but check www.capsicumbrothersracing.com for the imminent return to the streets and strips of Tony's Red Big Block VJ, and more awesome auto videos.

29th March 2002

On Friday 13th April 2001, on the way to the Burnout King Competition at Kwinana Motorplex, greenval broke a gearbox and was off the road the following day.

Nearly a year has passed since that fateful day, and on Friday 29th March 2002, greenval entered in the Burnout King competition at Kwinana Motorplex with a stronger, better, rebuilt gearbox, stronger, better, rebuilt engine, stronger and tougher differential, and stronger and tougher determination.

The competition draws some of the finest and toughest street machines to compete for the title of Burnout King, and this year there were also categories for Burnout Queen and Best Appearing.

After some drama getting to the burnout pad at Kwinana for heat 2 of the nights burnouts, greenval put on quite a show for chrysler fans and ordinary fans alike. Much learning was done by greenval in the 200 or so seconds of revving, smoking, flicking, shifting, grappling, turning, churning, popping, huffing fun that was 'the burnout'.

The effort was good enough to bump a small block V8ed gemini panel van out of the top 5 burnouts, and remain in the top 5, until some time later when amazingly even more impressive burnouts where performed on the pad, relegating the greenval to a lower placing.

But after a check of all the vital signs, greenval was quite happy to have come away unscathed. A minor backfire from the carburetters did pop the air intake pipes off, the engine was running a little hot, but sounding as sweet as ever, and the tyres, though not popped, where looking rather second hand. The rest of the night was enjoyed from the stands, the hard work was over. Greenval was not entered in the go-whoa event, though it was scheduled for it.

But then....

An announcement came over the speakers for leslie van smaalen, or was it lee, driver of the greenval to come to start line to where the commentator was. Initial reaction was guilt for not showing for the go-whoa event, but nearby the commentator, trophies were visible and guilt turned to inquisitive excitement....
